Part 6. The development of the plant on the eve of World War II

During 1935-1938 a significant reconstruction of our enterprise was carried out. A wagon depot was constructed, and the repair of wagons was transferred from the plant to the territory west of the Haivoron railway station. The free building was reconstructed into a locomotive-assembly workshop. Mechanical and wheel workshops were expanded, a boiler room was built, where two boilers were installed. In 1936 a casting workshop was put into operation.

A large amount of work had to be done to re-equip the machine workshop. The permission from the Ministry of Railways was received to stop the plant for two weeks. Two-thirds of the workers were given professional leaves, and 80 people carried out the reconstruction. All the machines that were changed to group drives were reinstalled. To do this, workers dug trenches, in which they installed transmissions for groups of 4-5 machines. There were 5 such groups. In addition, instead of one electric motor, five ones were installed.

Before stopping the plant, molds were made to cover the workshop. And despite the fact that it was rainy weather, the roof was reconstructed in 12 days.

All the shops and utility rooms were heated by steam. It was also used to provide technology for repairing locomotives. For these purposes, three steam boilers were installed and put into operation.

In 1938, the blacksmith workshop was enlarged due to an accessory building, where a Vincent press and a shearing press were installed, as well as a shower room. Here the hardening workshop was placed. Antonyuk worked as a temperer then.

This year workers built a warehouse for storing materials and reconstructed the access roads.

In 1939, the plant became part of the Southern Trust of the locomotive repair enterprises of the Ministry of Railways.

Haivoron Locomotive Repair Plant became the main base for repair of narrow-gauge locomotives of the country. Here all types of trains were repaired. Plans of locomotives repairing were increased. So, in 1939 Haivoron workers repaired 62 locomotives.

It was significantly increased the number of equipment. In particular, there were 9 working turning- screw-cutting, 3 drilling, 2 planing machines and one grooving machine. The plant increased the manufacture of semi-finished products and spare parts for the rolling stock of the country’s railways. In 1939, foundry hands produced 150 tons of cast iron and 13 tons of bronze castings, 4 tons of forgings. Almost 300 wheel pairs were repaired, as well as many elements of a steam heater, flame tubes, smoke tubes and water supply boilers. And during such rise of the enterprise, the Second World War was approaching… (to be continued)
